In marketing, everything is an experiment. I often hear people say to me,
“Sue, I see others doing all kinds of marketing activities. I’ve thought about doing something too, but there are so many options – I don’t even know where to start.”
This is so common. When we feel overwhelmed, we tend to procrastinate. Before we know it, an event is just around the corner and we’re scrambling to find last-minute solutions. Suddenly, rush fees and expedited shipping costs pile up, and the focus shifts from strategy and creativity to simply getting something done.
I remember working with a client from a law firm who wanted ideas for their upcoming event. She’d been meaning to do something special but kept putting it off, unsure which direction to take. As a result, a few great opportunities passed by. When we finally talked, she said our conversation helped her see things clearly – that marketing doesn’t have to be perfect, but it does need action.
After 12 years in marketing, here’s what I’ve learned: We have to dare to try new things. Even if we’re uncertain of the outcome, every effort teaches us something- what works, what doesn’t, and how to adapt next time. That’s how real growth happens.
